Lieutenant An Ell Donsaii story #3 eBook Laurence Dahners

I found this series to be very entertaining and a much too quick read. Book number five, however, does not fit the bill entirely. I do not know if the author was on a deadline and about to miss his deadline or just in a slump, had a bad day, or just did not care and could not get into the book writing. but this book was not up to his usual fine efforts. This is the first book that I found I had to flip pages because I was bored. Too many of the scenes in this book were exactly like the others, just different bad guys, but the same old story. I was very disappointed in this one.

Personally, I think the price per book is a little high, but not too unreasonable, as they are not complete books, in my opinion need to be over three hundred pages. The heroine is quite entertaining and a little over the top, at times.
I would recommend this series. I have only read the first five books and I am currently on number six. Enjoy yourself.

Lieutenant An Ell Donsaii story #3 eBook Laurence Dahners Reviews

I read book #1 "Quicker" last week and just finished all eight of the books in this series this week (the next week). I enjoyed the scope and the science in these books. I like the short clean side trips into the minds of other characters without getting lost in their stories. I also enjoy the clean style and fast moving of the story. Other reviewers have written up issues about typo's and grammar, but this has been corrected in the recent past because I have not had issues with it like I did with Andrew Saxon's earlier works.

I give book and this series a 5 Star rating. These books are described as good for young adult readers, but I have to say as a 51 year old software developer, I must be young at heart because I ate these books up and am looking forward to the next one. I happen to reside in North Carolina and really enjoy the realism of settings used, the scope of involvement with the University system, the glimpse into academic research, and especially good juxtaposition of good and bad behavior.

I rank this as one of my "Waiting for the next one please" series. I rank this among the top series I have enjoyed along with "Warriors Wings" by Evan Currie, "Odyssey One" by Evan Currie, "A Galaxy Unknown" by Thomas DePrima, and "Honor Harrington" by David Weber.
Third book in a row I started life reading Andre Norton so I have juvenile frame of mind and I read. Isaac Asamov for years I do not spell very well but I do have a wide range in what I read I do not find books with blood just for a bloodbath is acceptable or sexual description a major purpose .Dr Dahners writes a smooth if and I like the what if factor.

I read the first book of the series a while ago.
I just finished reading this third book and immediately purchased the fourth as well as two other unrelated kindle books by the same author.

Note you should read this series from the start (Quicker!)

Laurence Dahners is a new part-time writer, one of those who would not exist if not for the new paradigms of the internet, electronic books, and self publishing.
I am very glad that he got his chance!

Lieutenant (an Ell Donsaii story) is not an earth shaking book or series, it is not very long, it is not full of long character development.
What it and the other books of the series are is FUN!
Dahners style is transparent and easy to read and captivating and compelling.
His writing reminds me of two writers from the golden age of science fiction, Andre Norton and E.E. (Doc) Smith.
Like Norton his books are fast and easy to read and capture your interest and empathy for the characters.
Like Smith, these books capture a "sense of wonder" about the revealed universe.
The characters, prose, and action of these books are very suitable for young adult readers, but I am an old retired scientist/engineer of 67 years and I enjoyed them immensely.
I can't be certain that Dr. Dahners is writing this series for young adults. In many ways it feels like an adolescent fantasy, with a teen having extraordinary talents that are not recognized by adults; but the focus on science might take it out of the normal comfort zone of that target audience. The first volume introduced us to Ell Donsaii's super fast reflexes and her intelligence. The second volume gave us her discovery of communications through "ports" in a fifth dimension, and in this third story she uses that discovery to thwart a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Thus a pattern is established of Ell using her various super-skills to counter a grave threat, with little or no help from the adult agencies actually charged with such things. She is then showered with praise and highest honors, which have absolutely no effect on her innate shyness and modesty.

These books posit a breakthrough in physics from which much else follows, seen most clearly by Ell. They are not books that test the reader emotionally, since Ell ALWAYS succeeds regardless of the magnitude of the challenge. Her biggest challenge may come from juggling several boyfriends/admirers. Fun and interesting, definitely a supergirl worth reading about.
This is a wonderful series that tells a super hero story of a down to earth woman who is both athletically gifted and a genius level physicist and mathematician. Sounds boring said that way but the plots are very well thought out, the science is plausible and the characters are compelling. When reading these types of books I am ofter let down when the author doesn't have a cohesive story line or where they fail to keep the science or the character's "real". I've read 10 of the fourteen books in the series so far and have not been disappointed by any of them. GREAT READS!
